What is Buddy Bucks?
It is the holiday season again, and that means that many families will go without presents under their Christmas trees. The Pine Bluffs Junior/Senior High School Student Council has decided that once again this cannot happen in our community. Buddy Bucks is the program that ensures that no child will miss out on Christmas/Holiday gifts if we can help it.
Three years ago our students were able to raise $1900 in one week during our “mad minute” collection drive. The “mad minute” a quick collection before the beginning of the school day. We set a goal of $1500 and exceeded it.
Two years ago our students set a goal of matching the previous year at $1900, but we blew it out of the water with a total of $2750 collected. Last we were featured in the Wyoming Tribune Eagle and Channel 5 news for the great accomplishments of our Student Council. Our goal last year was $5000. That seemed like an outrageous goal, but in the end we accomplished it!
Our money collection is the most essential part of the process. We have four different pieces to our puzzle, which doesn’t work well without the support of each piece. Mad Minute at school (Starting Nov. 18)
Each class get designated baggies and they have 1 minute to put as much money into the baggie as possible (We use the intercom to countdown) Collection Jars in the town businesses (Starting Nov. 11) We walk in the Christmas Parade Last year we raised $150 in change in our stockings. Mail call to groups, businesses, and banks in Pine Bluffs, Cheyenne, and Laramie. 100 letters were mailed out.
We spend between $70 and $100 per student on the list. They all get a stocking filled with hygiene materials, candy, and small toys. They also get winter gear—hat, gloves, and scarves. Students in 6th grade and above get gift cards for their “large” presents while the young kids get toys. Each of our students get books and a board game OR puzzle.
