Riverton leads the charge for higher beer tax

Riverton, WY – Riverton city officials are proposing to raise Wyoming's malt beverage tax.
Since 1935, the tax on beer in Wyoming has been set at 2 cents
per gallon. But Riverton Mayor Ron Warpness has suggested changing the rate
to align with the national average of 28 cents per gallon.
He and other city leaders agreed to recommend the higher rate at
the 2011 Wyoming Association of Municipalities Annual Convention
this June in Sheridan.
Warpness said the extra revenue gained through a higher malt

Game and fish is looking for poaching clues

Lander, WY – State wildlife officials are asking the public's help in finding whoever shot and killed at least six pronghorn bucks in Fremont County. The animals were
left to rot. Wyoming Game and Fish Department Warden Chris Daubin calls it a
"very serious crime against wildlife."
A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for tips that lead to
an arrest and conviction.
Authorities believe the animals were shot early last week.

Financial health of Wyo schools insurance trust comes under scrutiny

Laramie, Wyo. – Resulting from reporting done by Wyoming Public Radio, the Wyoming Insurance Department says they have initiated contact with the Wyoming School Board Insurance Trust, or WSBAIT, to look into the entity's financial health.

Prescribed burn planned near Seminoe Reservoir

RAWLINS, Wyo – A prescribed burn covering more than 10 square miles could take place as soon as Monday in the Seminoe Mountains on the west side of Seminoe Reservoir.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management says the burn will eliminate potential fuel for wildfires while creating natural firebreaks. The BLM also says fire will rejuvenate aspen communities.

The Marking Pen Creek area, where the prescribed burn will take place, is popular with hunters and includes crucial winter range for antelope, elk, mule deer and bighorn sheep.

BLM to lift winter range closures

PINEDALE, Wyo. – The U.S. Bureau of Land Management's Pinedale Field Office is lifting its prohibition on motorized vehicles in big game winter ranges starting Sunday.

The Pinedale office says the public should be aware that wildlife experienced harsh conditions this winter And officials say many animals are in poor condition and that people should avoid causing them any additional stress.

Carbon capture and sequestration project reaches new phase

Laramie, WY – A carbon capture and sequestration project led by the University of Wyoming's Carbon Management Institute reached an important milestone this week.

Drilling began at a geologic formation called the Rock Springs Uplift on Sunday. Researchers believe the formation could be a good reservoir for carbon dioxide, and the drilling is part of the process of thoroughly evaluating the site.

BLM holds off on 6 Adobe Town leases, 143 issued

Cheyenne, Wyo. – The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is holding off on a decision whether to issue six oil and gas drilling leases in the scenic Adobe Town badlands of southwest Wyoming.

The reason is the area's potential wilderness characteristics, which the BLM plans to study in more detail under a December policy directive from Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.

Two other leases elsewhere in Wyoming will undergo similar wilderness review.
