Freudenthal Skeptical Of Tri-State Wolf Committee

LARAMIE, wyo – Governor Dave Freudenthal says he's skeptical of a three-state committee which aims to rewrite Wyoming's wolf law to satisfy the federal government.

The Tri-State Wolf committee is made up of lawmakers from Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, and aims to have wolves removed from the endangered species list.

Computer blamed for outage at nuke site

WASHINGTON – The Defense Department says a computer component failure disrupted communication between 50 nuclear missiles and the launch control center at Warren Air Force Base.

A Defense Department spokesman says the Air Force never lost the ability to launch the missiles and that the U.S. Strategic Command is looking into the incident.

A spokesman said the disruption did not appear to be significant and described it as "a technical problem."

Too many administrators in schools

CHEYENNE, wyo – A new Wyoming Department of Education report says that there are too many administrators and not enough teachers in Wyoming's school districts.

The report found that there are 154 more administrators and 583 fewer teachers than recommended by the funding model.

The Select Committee on School Finance Recalibration was presented with the report at its meeting in Cody last week.

Plane with Minn. exec, 3 kids missing in Wyoming

Cheyenne, Wyo. – Crews in western Wyoming are searching for a missing small plane carrying a Minnesota executive and his three children.

After two days of snow, the weather was clear Wednesday in the rugged, mountainous area near Lander.

Radio station KOVE/KDLY reports that searchers are looking in the area where the plane disappeared from radar. Two helicopters were also searching from the air.

Candidates for top education post differ on testing, other issues

Riverton, Wyo. – How to test Wyoming students seems to be a significant difference between the candidates running for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. During last night's debate in Riverton, Democrat Mike Massie said he wants to do away with the current statewide exam as soon as possible. "It doesn't tell us enough about individual student achievement," he said. "It takes up too much classroom time and it forces teachers to teach to the test."

Grizzly numbers hit new high in Yellowstone region

Billings, Mont. – Grizzly bear numbers in the three-state region in and around Yellowstone National Park have hit their highest level in decades.

Scientists from a multi-agency research team will announce Wednesday that at least 603 grizzlies now roam the Yellowstone area of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.

That's about three times the number when the species was put on the endangered list in 1975.

UW researchers monitor air quality in Sublette Co.

Laramie, Wyo. – University of Wyoming researchers have a powerful new way to monitor air quality levels in Sublette County.

Researchers in the UW College Engineering and Applied Science Department of Atmospheric Science recently unveiled an improved mobile air quality laboratory.

The mobile lab has been used the last two years to monitor and help predict high ozone levels in Sublette County.
