Hitching Post Fire

Laramie, WY – A fire broke out at the historic Hitching Post Inn and Resort in Cheyenne this morning. A passerby noticed heavy smoke coming from the lobby area of the building at 6:24 and called the fire department.

Division Chief for Cheyenne Fire and Rescue, John Narva, says crews were on the scene within five minutes of the call, but the fire was still going this afternoon, so he says the cause of the fire is unknown.

State, feds leaning toward expanding US 89

Jackson, WY – Transportation officials are leaning toward expanding a highway that runs through elk habitat near Jackson.

At issue is the reconstruction of seven miles of U.S. 89 from Melody Ranch to Hoback Junction. The final environmental impact statement done by the state and the Federal Highway Administration favors expanding the road to five lanes for most of the route.

Many residents fear that will lead to more accidents with wildlife during the winter.

UW Medical Residency Program Running Deficit

Laramie, WY – According to the audit the deficit is about 360 thousand dollars, which is due to unpaid bills by insurance companies and patients. The audit found the residency program has struggled to keep up with its accounts. Especially over the last five years when the patient load tripled and the office staff hasn't grown at all. The spokeswoman for U-W, Jessica Lowell, says they have hired an outside agency to try and collect the unpaid bills.

Wyoming Education Summary Released

Laramie, WY – The Wyoming Department of Education is putting out an annual look at the latest information on school districts. It's called the Education Summary and it has graduation rates, scores on the A-C-T test and per-pupil funding listed by district. However, there are no results from the statewide student assessment. State Superintendent, Jim McBride says normally that information is available.

Record Number Of Grizzlies Caught In Wyoming

Cody, Wyo – This year, officials with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department's Bear Management Program have participated in over 40 management captures of bears. To date this is a record. The bears they caught have been involved in a number of conflicts with humans ranging from eating grain to killing cattle.

Montana DEQ director to meet with Wyo. officials

Powell, WY – The director of the Montana Department of Environmental Quality says he'll meet with local officials in Wyoming next month. The meeting will be to discuss plans to haul mine tailings over the Chief Joseph Highway.
The waste would end up back in Montana for processing near the
town of Whitehall. Hauling out the tailings is part of a planned $24.4 million cleanup of the McLaren Mine, which is leaking toxic materials into a creek.

Hundreds remember Wyoming football player

Laramie, WY – Players at the University of Wyoming will honor linebacker Ruben Narcisse by wearing his initials on the back of their helmets for the next four years. The 19-year-old freshman from Miami was killed in a car accident Sept. 6. Three other freshman players were injured in the wreck.
