State superintendent candidate says reading is priority

Laramie, WY – The Democratic candidate for State Superintendent says Wyoming needs to improve reading skills for young students. State Senator Mike Massie says results from testing third graders are too low. On Wyoming's student exam only about half of third graders scored at proficient or above in reading. And on a national test only 33 percent of fourth graders were proficient or above. Massie says reading skills at an early age are vital for success later on.

Fewer people flying to Jackson in August

Laramie, WY – Jackson Hole Airport reports a six percent decline in the number of passengers boarding planes during August.
Jackson Hole Airport is the state's busiest in terms of number of annual passengers.
The Jackson Hole News & Guide reports the airport enplaned 3000 fewer passengers this August compared to the same month last year.
Year to date, the Jackson Hole Airport is 1 percent ahead of last year.

Southeast Wyoming community sees rise in people seeking help

Wyoming – We are going to begin today by updating a story we did earlier this year. While reporting on another story surrounding the increase of food stamps it was noted the Public Assistance increased substantially in Goshen County. The numbers were a surprise because the new Medium security prison had just opened in Torrington.
Some speculated that the prison may have led to families of inmates moving into the community but the issue was much more complicated than that.
