Shane started in broadcast engineering at the tender young age of 15 as a volunteer for KAXE-FM in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.  During his time at KAXE, he learned the trade from the station's contract engineer, Mark Persons.  Later, Shane joined KAXE as their full-time Chief Engineer.  He made a number of upgrades to their studio technology and launched their first website including one of the very first live audio web streams in the nation.  After a number of years at KAXE, Shane went to work for Minnesota Public Radio where he designed and implemented a system for inserting local underwriting and weather forecasts at stations around the state.  Following his time at Minnesota Public Radio, Shane went on to work for a major broadcast equipment manufacturer.  In 2006, Shane joined the staff of Wyoming Public Media.  Shane is a senior member of the Society of Broadcast Engineers and the Association of Public Radio Engineers.  When he isn't busy maintaining the Wyoming Public Radio network he enjoys spending time with his wife and two rescued shelter dogs.

Reception/Frequencies, Weather and Road Conditions

Wyoming Public Media

We are currently experiencing transmitter issues on 90.9 KUWG, Gillette. Shane will travel to the site and investigate as soon as possible.

After receiving a high temperature alarm from Fort Washakie last week, I briefly shut the transmitter down on Saturday while I drove to the site.  When I arrived, I found this…

The hub of the air conditioner fan blade had failed and literally chewed the motor shaft in half.  The building was 120 degrees inside but reducing transmitter output to 50% and opening a fresh air damper brought it down to 90 degrees.

I have new parts en-route and expect to make repairs today. Never a dull moment.
