Laramie, WY – A backcountry skier killed in an avalanche west of Big Sky, Montana, has been identified as a Montana State University student from Vermont.
The Gallatin County Sheriff's Department says Tyler Stetson of Shelburne, Vermont, died in the avalanche yesterday. Stetson was in his 20s.
The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center says his body was recovered within 10 minutes of the avalanche. The center says the snow swept Stetson into trees, and he was dead from trauma when searchers found him.
Searchers included his ski partner, and other people in the area.
Investigators from the avalanche center were on the slope today, trying to learn more about the slide.
People have died around the West in avalanches this winter, including several snowmobilers in Wyoming.
