Laramie, Wy – Rangers in Glacier National Park killed a 185-pound black bear. That bear chased some children under a car then swiped at them.
The male bear was shot Sunday, a day after the incident with the family from Wyoming.
Glacier officials say Gillette resident John Hayden and his three sons encountered the bear after walking about 100 yards into the woods. The family tried to back away, but the bear pursued.
It shredded a shirt tossed by Hayden, who then hit the bear with another shirt. Undeterred, the animal threatened the boys as they hid under the car. The bear finally retreated after another park visitor sprayed repellent.
Park officials say their earlier attempts to remove the bear from a roadside included firing rubber bullets and bean bags at the animal.
