Laramie, Wy – There will be a delay in the construction of the new medium security state penitentiary. The state only received one bid to build it and that came in 85 percent above the projected cost.
The director of the Department of Corrections, Bob Lampert, says they are going to try and figure out how this happened. He says it was a surprise because they had professionals estimate the cost and usually they're within five percent. Some construction costs are up like concrete and steel, but Lampert says that shouldn't have driven costs up to this level.
Now, Lampert says they are going to look at all kinds of options, like doing the construction in phases or perhaps not having all of the inmates that have serious physical and mental needs at this facility because that increases costs.
