Laramie, WY – The director of the Social Justice Research Center at the University of Wyoming has cancelled Bill Ayers' visit. The 1960s activist turned education theorist was scheduled to speak on Monday night. U-W Government Relations Director Don Richards says University officials discussed Ayers' visit with the Social Justice Research Center. But Richards says they didn't push for the event to be cancelled
"All of our discussions were factual in nature, trying to gather information about the event. I am not aware of any internal pressure that was imposed on the director to come down one way or the other at this point."
The Social Justice Research Center is privately endowed, but Richards says it's possible the university could have faced financial blowback for hosting Ayers. He says U-W had received hundreds of emails about Ayers' appearance, most of them opposing his visit. Ayers is now a professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago. His lecture was to focus on social justice issues and education.
