Bill To Invalidate Gay Marriages Dies
By Bob Beck
Cheyenne, WY – A bill that would have kept same sex marriages from being recognized in Wyoming has been defeated. A house committee defeated the measure 7 to 6 after some emotional testimony.
Committee members quizzed supporters about the need for the bill, since Wyoming law already defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman. They also asked about how the law would impact the ability for a same-sex partner to access retirement benefits, and whether there would be other negative impacts. In the end they voted it down with Speaker Roy Cohee casting the deciding vote. Representative Debbie Hammons of Worland also voted against the measure. She says it was about doing the right thing. Supporters of the measure say it was about preserving families and were disappointed with the vote. They plan to bring the bill back in the future.
