Board of Ed Tightens Private College Rules

Laramie, Wy – The state Board of Education approved more
detailed rules Tuesday for revoking licenses for private schools.
The rules would apply to universities that offer distance education and maintain a presence in Wyoming.
Superintendent of Public Instruction Trent Blankenship praised the changes but reiterated the department's position that the state should require accreditation from a third party, something only the legislature can do.
A legislative task force is working on a new private-school licensing law. Blankenship says he expects legislation requiring accreditation to be introduced next year.
The rule change followed board discussions in November of pulling as many as four school licenses because of alleged violations of state rules.
However, attorneys for the department were concerned that the department's existing rules weren't solid enough to go ahead with pulling a license.
