Brain Injury Program Out of Funds
By Peter O'Dowd
Laramie, WY – A state program for people with severe brain injury has run out of money. The legislature approved more than 14-million dollars for a brain-injury waiver program in the current budget. But the Department of Health's Beverly Swistowicz says 30 people cannot receive benefits like in-home assistance and physical therapy because all the money has been allocated. Advocates say early treatment is critical for a full recovery. Swistowicz agrees, but says there's still hope: "There is a window of time for benefit, but it doesn't mean that window absolutely closes. We have people making progress years after their brain injury, so it's not like a switch is going off and on."
Swistowicz says a name has not been taken off the waiting list since last June. The waiting list is the largest since the waiver program began in 2001.
