Campbell County to See 15th Coal Mine
Laramie, Wy – Campbell County should have a new coal mine operating in the next few years.
Arch Coal Incorporated and Peabody Energy this week announced an agreement that officials said would allow Peabody to develop its new School Creek Mine.
A spokesperson for Peabody, said the mine could begin producing up to 40 million tons of coal annually by 2008. She said the mine would employ more than 300 people.
The School Creek Mine, 60 miles south of Gillette, will be the 15th coal mine in Campbell County when it's completed.
News of the new mine caught state and local officials by surprise.
Tom Langston, director of Community Development for the City of Gillette, said the city didn't know the mine was coming. Most of the workers at the mine would likely live in the city.
Tom Schroeder with the state's Industrial Siting Council said he was unaware of the School Creek project. However, he said he doubted that it would top the $150-million threshold that would
require a permit.
