Wyoming Governor Matt Mead says it’s the duty of the state attorney general to continue to defend state law in the court that says marriage can only occur between one man and one woman. But his Democratic opponent Pete Gosar says the state should drop the case and allow gay marriage to occur in Wyoming.
"I think there are no differences in citizens in our constitution and in the U.S. constitution and what’s afforded to one, must be afforded to all."
Mead calls himself an opponent of same sex marriage, but he says the issue is currently being handled by the courts. He says he will abide by what they decide.
"It’s not the way I would want Wyoming to go, because of my personal belief, but if that’s what the courts ultimately rule…then that’s what we will have to live with in Wyoming."
In the meantime, Mead says he has no authority to simply void the law that declares marriage between one man and one woman.
