Casper to clear apartment building
Laramie, WY – Residents of an apartment building in Casper were notified this morning (Tuesday) that they must vacate the premises by October ninth. Wyoming Public Radio's Renny MacKay reports this is a result of unsafe conditions in the building.
The Casper Fire Department issued orders to vacate the 35 units at the K-C Apartments near downtown Casper. Justin Smith with the Fire Department says inspections of the building done on September 23rd show a fire could break out at any time and would not be contained to a single unit and that's concerning.
"Because of a lack of smoke detectors or alarm systems and subsequently there are exits that are blocked or compromised so if any situation were to break out in there we're not willing to live with the consequences that may come from that."
Smith says they have told the residents how to get in touch with the community development office which could help them find a new place to live. If people don't leave by October 9th Smith says they will be forced from the building.
