Cheyenne, WY – The city of Cheyenne has laid off 20 employees in a move that will save an estimated $1.1 million in salaries and benefits this fiscal year and next.
Mayor Rick Kaysen says the affected workers in public works, parks and recreation, the clerk's office, police administration and engineering learned Wednesday of the cuts, effective immediately. They will receive benefits through April.
Kaysen says 19 other employees, including two police officers, accepted voluntary retirement offers and left March 18. That was expected to save $1.9 million through the next fiscal year as the city absorbs lower sales tax, franchise fee and building permit revenues.
Cheyenne expects $3.3 million less in state funding for the next fiscal year.
