Cheyenne Struggles To Open Juvenile Crisis Center

A year after it started trying to recruit staff, the juvenile crisis center in  Cheyenne is still nowhere near opening.

Juvenile Crisis Centers provide a short term stay and counseling to youth who are in crisis as an alternative to lockup. Currently there are crisis centers open in most major Wyoming towns, but Cheyenne has been without one since the Attention Homes crisis center closed in 2010.

In 2014 the Laramie County Commissioners told the sheriff’s department to convert part of the county’s juvenile detention building into a crisis center. Captain Michael Sorenson oversees the entire facility. he says he hasn’t been able to open the juvenile crisis center because its hard to find the right people.

“We are looking for someone that, if there aren’t kids in the crisis center, we could utilize them in other duties. It just makes sense to stretch your resources as far as you can.”

Sorenson says he is unsure when Cheyenne’s juvenile crisis center may open. Right now Cheyenne youth who need those services usually have to go to Laramie.
