Choice gas panned by Consumer Advocate

Laramie, Wy – Wyoming Source Gas customers have until the end of the month to lock in a supplier and a natural gas price for the coming year. The utility says the purpose of choice gas is to stablize gas prices for consumers. But Wyoming's Consumer Advocate Bryce Freeman says all Choice Gas does is help the gas utility make money. Freeman says the choice gas program ends up charging customers more then if they just paid the market price...which is known as the pass-on rate.
"We do an analysis every year about how customers fared during the past choice gas year. And consistently we find that the pass on regulated rate option is the lowest cost option every year."
Freeman says even those who get special blended rates rarely save money. He has advocated doing away with choice gas, but the Wyoming Public Service Commission has opted to keep it in place.
