Chronic Wasting Disease On the Move
Laramie, WY – Chronic Wasting Disease is on a slow march westward. Game and Fish Department officials have confirmed the first case this season of the disease in an elk in the Shirley Mountains. To this point, the disease has been concentrated in elk and deer to the east of that region. Terry Kreeger supervises the veterinary services branch of the game department. He says there won't be any light at the end of the tunnel for a while. "I think this thing is going to take a century or more to play out. And right now it's anybody's guess as to what the ultimate results of this disease will be," he said. Kreeger says it's difficult to know if the disease will have any lasting impact on the large game population. He says this latest case shows that the disease is continuing to spread slowly from animal to animal.
