Climbing Season Starts at Devils Tower
Laramie, Wy – Extreme climbers are returning to Devils Tower. The new climbing season has started and the National Monument is offering some new services like a registration office. Chief Ranger, Scott Brown, says right now there several routes closed to protect potential falcon nesting sites. This June there will again be a voluntary closure of climbing to respect American Indian culture. Brown says most people observe that closure, but the percentage of people complying has gone down since 1995 when they started the voluntary closure. He says since then the rate of compliance went from 85 percent to 69 percent.
Brown says American Indians often do try and convey to climbers that are there in June the reasons for closing the Park to climbing. Brown says other visitors are welcome in June but should be sensitive to the fact that many Native Americans are at Devils Tower to observe religious rituals.
