Cheyenne, WY – A state legislative committee has decided to support a proposed constitutional amendment that would prevent same sex marriages from being legal in Wyoming. The committee voted 5-4 to send the bill to the House floor. Currently Wyoming only allows marriages between a man and woman, but some fear that the state would have to recognize same sex marriages that have legally occurred elsewhere. Torrington Republic Ed Buchanan says they are hoping to ask citizens to decide the issue before a court does.
But opponents call the legislation offensive and discriminatory. They also fear that if the issue went on the ballot it would lead to a nasty advertising campaign, which would harm the state's image.
