Committee To Review Eminent Domain

Laramie, Wy – A legislative committee is taking a close look at whether to tighten Wyoming's Eminent Domain laws. Eminent domain allows government to take private property for the public good. Following a recent U-S Supreme court ruling that allowed land takings for economic development purposes some Wyoming landowners fear unwanted development on Ag lands. But the Powder River Basin Resource Council's John Vanvig argues that some of these battles are already being fought in the Powder River region, thanks to Coalbed Methane development.
Vanvig says they would like Wyoming's law to focus in on what is really the public good. He would even favor a jury finding to be part of the law. The legislature's agriculture committee will begin discussing the issue Wednesday (today) in Douglas.
