Laramie, Wy – There is a public outcry in Cheyenne over a decision by the Animal Shelter to kill 42 dogs. That was done in an attempt to halt an outbreak of canine influenza.
A public meeting on the decision is scheduled for next Thursday.
This past Thursday, about 15 people met at The Plains Hotel in downtown Cheyenne to discuss their concerns about the shelter, including whether shelter conditions are adequate.
Meanwhile several local veterinarians say they support the decision to euthanize the dogs this week. They say that euthanasia was the only way to ensure that the shelter did not spread dog flu to pets outside the shelter.
Shelter officials say they consulted with those veterinarians in arriving at their decision.
