Corrections Director Praises The Legislature

Cheyenne, Wy – State Corrections Director Bob Lampert is praising the work of the Legislature for allowing major prison construction projects to move forward.
This year, lawmakers set aside 126-(M)-million dollars for renovation and construction at all four prisons.
Lampert says the projects will allow 500 inmates now housed out-of-state to return by 2007.
He says much of the expansion should also help improve rehabilitation and job-training programs.
Representative Colin (CALL'-in) Simpson of Cody says the number-one goal of the corrections system is providing public safety, but he says reintegrating inmates back into society is also critical.
He says the improved facilities will provide more parenting classes, substance-abuse treatment and vocational training.
Returning inmates to Wyoming will also put them closer to family, which lawmakers say will encourage inmates to become better citizens so they can be released earlier and NOT return to prison.
