Counties Need Contracts For Fire

Laramie, Wy –
The days of handshake deals between County Government and some firefighters is over. Because of a recent ruling by the Wyoming Attorney General, counties cannot fund county fire departments that are not part of Government. Fire Districts are part of a county, but many volunteer fire departments in remote areas don't have the tax base to form such a district. Albany County Attorney Richard Bohling says developing a contract between the county and firefighters gets around the problem.
Bohling says counties used to provide services and occasional funding on a handshake basis, but that was never legally allowed. He believes by entering into a contract, it also provides volunteer firefighters more security.
