Doctors consider electronic records program

Laramie, WY – State healthcare leaders are considering applying to a federal program that would pay doctors to use electronic records.

The Wyoming Health Information Organization's Larry Biggio says that the state's doctors are slowly realizing the value of moving away from paper records.

But rural practices often have a hard time making the transition.

"A lot of those practices are struggling financially, so the issue of how do I afford to get involved with this health care technology' is much more difficult here because of that demographic," Biggio says.

Advocates of electronic records say they provide better communication between doctor and patient.

If selected, private practices could receive up to 290-thousand dollars to use the technology.
