Economist says Wyoming Amtrak doesn't make sense

Laramie, WY – Right now there are over 13 billion dollars available to Amtrak for improving and expanding operations. This has some people in the west pushing for the return of an old route; from Denver through Wyoming to Salt Lake City and u to Portland. But University of Wyoming economics professor Rob Godby says this route does not make a lot of sense financially: "That was a pretty unprofitable route. It duplicated an existing route and Amtrak lost a lot of money; 20 million dollars in the last year. And that was running every other day and taking Sundays off."

There is still an Amtrak train that runs from Denver to Salt Lake but it goes through Colorado. Godby says despite having this money available for improvements, Amtrak is strapped for cash and is only profitable in the northeast.
