Newcastle, WY – Newcastle residents say they witnessed dramatic flares from the Wyoming Refining Co. oil refinery this week.
The flares, reported in the Casper Star-Tribune, occurred Tuesday. The newspaper says refinery officials didn't return calls seeking comment.
Refineries commonly burn some gases when restarting after an electrical power failure. The flames are called flares.
The state Department of Environmental Quality says the refinery had two power failures followed by two flare incidents on Tuesday.
The department says it's investigating.
In July, Wyoming Refining agreed to pay to power-wash several Newcastle homes after they were hit with oil droplets accidentally released from the plant.
