Gillette, Wy – A Catholic church in Gillette has told a lesbian couple they can no longer receive communion in part because they spoke out against the state bill that opposed recognizing gay marriages.
Leah Vader and Lynne Huskinson received a letter in early March from the pastor of the Catholic parish they've attended since 1998. Vader says the letter made reference to their opposition to the gay marriage bill, also called senate file 13.
Bishop David Ricken and the diocese of Cheyenne had specifically instructed catholics to support senate file 13. And of course, in good conscience, not only could I not support it, but I felt I had to publicly oppose it as legislation that did not belong in the state of Wyoming.
A spokesman for the diocese says that he did NOT know that the letter referenced the couple's opposition to the bill and he says the church also refuses communion to heterosexual couples who are unmarried and living together.
