Gov Asks Feds To Cancel Wyoming Range Leases

Laramie, WY – Outfitters and other outdoor enthusiasts are cheering Governor Dave Freudenthal's request to the federal government to cancel drilling leases in the Wyoming Range. The Governor wrote a letter urging the Interior Department to cancel nearly 45,000 acres of leases in the Range and reimburse the companies for any costs they incurred.

Outfitter Chuck Thornton has been guiding hunters in the Wyoming Range for eighteen years. He says the gas and oil development would hurt him.

"The objective of our business is to take people away from that sort of thing so they can experience the way it used to be. So if you cross a road or run into a drilling pad, that takes away all that experience from them. It could likely destroy our business," he said.

Governor Freudenthal's letter says that Senator John Barrasso will be introducing legislation that will prevent further leasing in the Wyoming Range.
