Gov: G&F Has A Tough Year Ahead
By Peter O'Dowd
Cheyenne, WY – Governor Dave Freudenthal says 2008 will be a difficult year for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.
By the end of this month, state wildlife officials will be one step closer to managing the gray wolf. And the governor says that means the Game and Fish Department is about to get a lot busier.
"The calls that are currently going to the Fish and Wildlife are going to go to the Game and Fish, questions about damages and payments," Freudenthal said.
"So it's going to be one more set of responsibility and its going to be very controversial," he added.
The governor says the department will also be challenged this year by additional federal scrutiny regarding the status of the sage grouse and by land management decisions, especially near the Pinedale Anticline.
Freudenthal says the best way to help the department cope is to provide it with funding. The governor says so far he thinks the legislature will give Game and Fish the money it needs.
