Governor cuts 300 million dollars from last budget.

Cheyenne, Wy –
Governor Dave Freudenthal says funding for local governments and highways will suffer the most in his proposed budget for the next two years. The Governor released his budget that cuts 300 million dollars in spending from his last two year budget. "I mean, we have been living on a champagne budget and now all we can afford is soda pop. But that's more than a lot of other states. "
Local Governments would see a reduction of about 230 million dollars under the Governor's proposal. He would eliminate spending on highways by about 150 million dollars. Freudenthal says they will be able to use stimulus money to maintain spending on schools. Overall he says his budget is holding the line.
"We are not laying people off, I'm not closing schools, I'm not saying this is without pain. I'm saying that given that this is the worst recession since the great depression, that we in Wyoming are doing ok. What I don't know is how these next couple of years are going to sort out."
The Governors budget now goes to the legislature's Joint Appropriations
Committee for its consideration.
