Governor Opposes Brand Inspection Fee Hike

Cheyenne, Wy – After some thought, the Governor will not support higher fees for ranchers to cover a nearly one and a half million dollar shortfall in the Wyoming Brand Inspection program. Governor Dave Freudenthal says he opposes an increase in brand inspection fees at sale barns because he sees it as a crisis tax. State Budget Officer Mike McVay says the state should have a surplus of Brucellosis money and some of that can be shifted into the program. He says the Governor also supports some cuts within the program.
State Ag Officials says the shortfall is both drought related, since there is fewer cattle to inspect and because of higher travel costs and benefits for Brand Inspectors.
