Laramie, Wyo. – Governor Dave Freudenthal says the state will help pay to keep Sylvan Pass safe from avalanches.
Freudenthal made the statement in a letter to the Yellowstone National Park superintendent Friday.
The governor says he will include 35-thousand dollars in the next budget to pay for a howitzer, which would be used to knock down dangerous snow build-up.
"The letter demonstrates our good faith willingness to underwrite a portion of the expenses to meet the federal obligation to keep Sylvan Pass open," the governor says.
The governor says he will also include 35-hundred dollars for storage and maintenance of the howitzer.
The National Park Service recently decided to keep Sylvan Pass open in the wintertime despite the expense of keeping the road free from avalanches.
