Casper, Wy – A coalition of conservation groups has
filed a formal protest of a federal plan to manage oil and gas drilling in southwest Wyoming's Red Desert.
The Wyoming Outdoor Council, the Biodiversity Conservation
Alliance, the Wilderness Society, the Wyoming chapter of the Sierra
Club, and Lander resident Tom Bell filed the suit yesterday
They say the Bureau of Land Management failed to comply with
federal law by failing to provide adequate safeguards to protect
The B-L-M says its proposal would prohibit new oil and natural
gas drilling in more than half the area, create new jobs and enrich
local communities with new tax revenue.
Plans call for about 200 oil and gas exploration, discovery and
production gas wells would be drilled over the next two decades in
the Jack Morrow Hills.
