Laramie, Wy – The Alliance for Historic Wyoming is trying to save some old school buildings. The group is analyzing what they call historic school buildings across the state, to see which buildings are worth saving in 2009. Mary Humstone with the Alliance says state policies that pour money into districts for new schools have resulted in dozens of historic buildings being demolished, with dozens more on the "tear down" list. She says in many cases, public landmarks disappear.
Humstone says updating buildings also fits in with the "green" movement, because it means fewer new materials, and the older schools have more natural light, reducing electricity usage. But she says it is sometimes difficult to convince administrators, who prefer newer buildings.
