Hamilton U. owner gets 2 years for tax fraud
Casper, Wyo. – The owner of an unaccredited online university that drew attention to Wyoming as a haven for such schools has been sentenced to two years in prison for tax fraud.
Rudy Marn owned Hamilton University, a school that existed primarily online but had an office in Evanston. Marn pleaded guilty Aug. 1 to filing a false individual income tax return for 2003.
U.S. District Judge William Downes sentenced Marn in Casper on Tuesday. An IRS spokesman says Downes also ordered Marn to pay $620,000 in restitution to the IRS.
Marn's attorney, Tim Kingston, couldn't immediately be reached for comment Tuesday.
Wyoming has since cracked down on unaccredited colleges and Hamilton University no longer exists.
