Cheyenne, Wy – Region wide drought conditions could leave Wyoming with a hay shortage. The state supplies hay for both itself and other states, but cannot seem to produce enough for all the demand. Livestock and Forage Program Manager for the Wyoming Business Council, Scott Keith, says that this is a serious problem. Keith says hay theft may become an issue and advises producers to take good inventory of their hay and to keep it in a secured area if possible. While rain is the ultimate solution to the problem, Keith says that purchasing hay from the east is an option but that it is also important for cattle producers to practice good grazing and feeding management.
