Heart Mountain Foundation Prepares to Build Walking Path
Laramie, Wy – Construction could being this spring on a
self-guided walking trail through the site of the former Heart Mountain Relocation Camp, one of three Wyoming sites where Japanese-Americans were sent during World War Two.
Dave Reetz is president of the Heart Mountain Foundation. He says plans are already laid for the walking path -- the foundation is just waiting for approval from the federal Bureau of Reclamation, which owns most of the land.
The tour would include an information kiosk and eight separate
stations along a half-mile walking path. Each stop along the walking tour would include pictures and text describing a different aspect of the camp.
Heart Mountain once housed more than ten-thousand Japanese-Americans in northern Wyoming, about 12 miles northwest of Cody. It was used from the summer of 1942 until the fall of 1945, some two months after the war ended.
