Highway Bill Remains Stalled

The U.S. House of Representatives still cannot reach an agreement on a new federal highway bill, and the Speaker of the House cancelled a vote to extend funding for transportation projects for three more years.

If the issue is not resolved by Saturday, some members of Congress say it could lead to the cancelation of construction projects and a loss of jobs in every state.

During a recent visit to Laramie, Wyoming Congresswoman Cynthia Lummis admitted the issue is frustrating.  Lummis had previously supported the House bill until transportation budgets were reduced from five years to 18 months.  She says that makes it difficult for the Wyoming Department of Transportation and similar agencies to plan. The revised bill also removed money for roads and bridges, and shifted those funds into mass transit…

“Now it’s much worse than it was before and there is a loss of buy in from those of us who were really excited about the original bill, plus it’s not adequately paid for,” said Lummis.

Lummis says she remains hopeful that a short term agreement will be reached.
