Cheyenne, WY – An attempt to set up a statewide property tax to help fund the community college system has been defeated. The Wyoming House of Representatives rejected the idea by Jackson Democrat Pete Jorgenson who urged lawmakers to support a measure that would not raise taxes... but spread the cost of the colleges across the state. But Powell Republican Dave Bonner says Jorgenson's idea would actually be unfair to the colleges: "Colleges would be expected to provide greater services and offerings to the formally non district counties and that is to be expected. But there would be no additional revenues to meet those expectations. There is more work to be done or the other 16 counties will be losers."
Jorgenson said Bonner had a point and asked the House to allow him to solve the problem in committee...but the bill failed to acquire the necessary two thirds vote for introduction.
