Laramie, Wy – Add school security to the list of issues on which Democratic Governor Dave Freudenthal and Republican challenger Ray Hunkins disagree.
Hunkins says teachers should be allowed to carry firearms, as long as they're properly trained. The Wheatland attorney says arming teachers would be a good way to make schools safer in the short term, while the Legislature looks at long-term solutions.
Freudenthal disagrees. He says teachers shouldn't have to worry about weapons in schools and should be free to concentrate on teaching.
The governor says he would support more money for school safety officers, but says that's largely a local decision.
Late September and early October saw three deadly school shootings -- one each in Colorado, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
