Hunting Bison May Help with Conservation
Laramie, WY – The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks says one way to help bison is to hunt them. Spokeswoman Melissa Frost says that's not what you might expect, but she thinks it's true: "We've seen it in Elk or ducks in the United States where if you have sportsmen and women on board supporting a species, then they can contribute to the long term conservation of that species."
On Friday, Montana released this year's bison hunting licenses. In 2005, the state reinstated bison hunting to allow an additional tool for managing bison migrating from Yellowstone into Montana.
Frost says the primary tool for managing bison numbers is through the Inter-agency Bison Management plan although she hopes in the future that bison hunting will become the main strategy.
