I-80 Crash Includes Ammonium Nitrate Load

Laramie, Wy – An accident involving two semis closed I-80 this morning. It happened on the West-bound lane between Laramie and Cheyenne near the Lincoln Monument. Sergeant Stephen Townsend with the Wyoming Highway Patrol says one of the trucks was carrying ammonium nitrate. That compound when combined with diesel fuel is explosive. Townsend says despite that there was very little danger because not much of the ammonium nitrate actually spilled and it did not mix with any fuel.
Townsend says there was one fatality and two injuries. No names are being released until next of kin are notified. At this time I-80 eastbound is open and one lane westbound is open.
