Landslide Potential Prompts Evacuation In Jackson

Wyoming Geological Survey

Update 04/09 20:30

City officials have now ordered an evacuation of the area. For the most up-to-date information, visit the city's website.

Original post:

Jackson emergency services have issued an evacuation advisory for an area in the northwest part of town because of concerns over landslides

Cracks in the pavement at a Walgreens parking lot and a broken water main first tipped officials off to hillside movement on East Gros Ventre Butte. City officials are monitoring the hillside and are urging citizens to steer clear of Budge Drive. State Geologist Tom Drean couldn't speak to the specifics of this slide, but says they're common this time of year.

"A lot of it has to do with high moisture years where you have extra load from water in the hillside slopes and then you get a freeze-thaw cycle like we have now this time of year," Drean says.

The Jackson police department is going door to door to notify residents of the potential hazard but the area is not currently being evacuated. Residents who wish to evacuate or who might need help in the event of an evacuation should notify the department.
