Laramie, Wy – Former Laramie mayor Fred Homer died Sunday at age 66.
Homer, who taught courses in political philosophy at the University of Wyoming, served as mayor of Laramie from 2002 to 2004. He served on the Laramie City Council from 2000 to 2004.
Homer died at a Minnesota hospital where he was being treated for a heart problem.
Before finishing his term as mayor, Homer underwent heart surgery and was forced to miss several meetings. He returned for his final meeting, saying he wanted to bring a sense of completion to his career as an elected official.
Laramie Mayor Jodi Guerin served with Homer on the city council for two years. She said she remembered Homer as a compassionate, optimistic leader who was concerned about the health and well-being of citizens.
Laramie Councilman Klaus Hanson said Homer was a dear friend and said he could describe the man in three words: honesty, integrity and kindness.
Homer and his wife Carole had three children, all of whom attended U-W.
