Laramie Officials Postpone Aquifer Protection Vote

Laramie, WY – Laramie City Officials have postponed a vote on an ordinance to protect the city's water supply until a full scientific study can be completed, as the Laramie Boomerang is reporting. Many city residents called for the new law after a developer proposed building houses and a golf course on top of the city's underground aquifer last year.
At issue is what exactly is needed to protect the aquifer. Some landowners with property on or near the proposed protected area protested any change in the law. And some developers said the potential cost of any testing required before building near the aquifer would prevent them from building, and essentially take away their property. But city planner Peter Wysocki says groundwater tests do NOT constitute a taking of property. But developers and landowners have another year until the issue comes up again for a vote.
