Lawmakers Begin Updating The School Funding Model

This week a group of legislators will be deciding how much money Wyoming schools will receive over the next five years. The process is called re-calibration and it looks at all the elements of the school funding model.

The review comes at a time when the state is looking at a possible financial downturn and Senate Education Chairman Hank Coe says that will enter into their discussions. He says they may need to be more frugal than in the past.

“When the legislature in its infinite wisdom over the years has chosen to fund at higher levels in a lot of areas, rather than the recommendation from consultants on a cost basis. So I think we have to take that into consideration and the extra funding that we’ve funded since the 2010 calibration.”

Coe says that includes more money for teacher pay. Consultants have suggested they enhance resources for teachers who are dealing with struggling students. The committee holds its first meeting Thursday in Casper. It will present its recommendations to the full legislature in February.
