Laramie, Wy – A proposed bill defining how to pay for leaking landfills around the state has earned the support of a legislative committee.
For months, work has been under way to craft a legislative solution to the landfill problems.
The result was the bill reviewed Tuesday by the Joint Minerals, Business and Economic Development Interim Committee
Dave Finley of the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality
says the bill is designed to provide significant incentives for communities to close small landfills before 2010 and to move toward regional landfills.
He says there are now 21 leaking landfills in the state.
The draft bill outlines how accounts would be created to pay for cleaning up leaking landfills and to create a trust fund.
