Wyoming – Illnesses like diabetes and heart disease have devastated Native American communities across the United States. One tribe, the Hocak in Nebraska, has begun an unusual form of treatment. The elders and others have begun to meditate. Prosper Waukon is a businessman and the President of the Hocak Elders Council, Incorporated. He says the Hocak are also trying to become healthier and more economically self-sustaining by building organic greenhouses and developing wind and solar power. Waukon is speaking in Jackson on Monday night. He joins Addie Goss on the phone to describe how illnesses like diabetes have affected his community.
